Overview:

The Red Switch Technician I will be responsible for operating and maintaining the Defense Red Switch Network (DRSN) facility in accordance with Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) regulations and guidelines. This position requires attention to detail and technical expertise in communications-electronics maintenance functions.

Roles & Responsibilities:

Operation and Maintenance (O&M):

Operate and maintain the Digital Small Switch (DSS-2) facility, ensuring optimal performance and compliance with DISA guidelines.

Monitoring and Troubleshooting:

Monitor trunk outages using the Integrated Network Monitoring System (INMS), switch printer, administrative terminal, and Enhanced Communications Console (ECC).

Perform direct trunk dialing checks over all channels associated with the switch to ensure satisfactory operation of voice circuits.

Preventive Maintenance:

Conduct Preventive Maintenance Inspections (PMIs) on the switch and peripheral equipment to ensure continued reliability.

Database Management:

Create and update databases in the administrative terminal based on user information and DISA requirements.

Perform database backups and downloads to update switch configurations and ensure data integrity.

User Support and Training:

Train subscribers on the features and capabilities of their phone instruments, ensuring compliance with DRSN security requirements.

Outage Reporting:

Report outages promptly to the Theater Communications Facility (TCF) for tracking in REMEDY and provide status updates to designated agencies.

Documentation and Reports:

Annotate all activities in the Master Station Log (MSL) database.

Prepare call detail history reports for DISA and military personnel as required.

Compliance and Quality Control:

Maintain DRSN facility in accordance with Quality Control (QC), DRSN Security, DISA Performance Evaluation (PE), and Communications Security (COMSEC) checklists.

Collaboration:

Work with military technical monitors, Special Security Office (SSO), and other Department of Defense contractors and civilians to support the DRSN mission.

Shift Work:

Must be able to work rotating shift schedules providing 24-hour day/7-day week coverage.

Additional Duties:

Perform additional duties as assigned, including escorting individuals requiring access to the RED Switch and coordinating with external help desks for troubleshooting.

Qualifications:

Education:

High School Diploma required.

Bachelor's Degree in IT or a related field is preferred.

Candidates must maintain at least one (1) baseline certification in compliance with DISA requirements (e.g., CompTIA Security+ ce).

Experience:

1-2 years of experience in Communications-Electronics Maintenance, including installation, troubleshooting, and repair of electronic communications equipment.

Experience with Microsoft Office software and the ability to work in a fast-paced office environment.

Military or civilian technical training course of six (6) months or more, followed by a minimum of 24 months of on-the-job training (OJT).

Certifications:

Relevant certifications in communications-electronics maintenance or related fields are required.

Skills:

Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work rotating shifts.

Familiarity with Microsoft Office and communication equipment is essential.
