Position Overview
The Royal Society of Literature (RSL) is seeking an inspirational leader to serve as Director of this prestigious literary organization. Founded in 1820, the RSL is dedicated to nurturing, celebrating, and defending the best in British literature. This role offers a unique opportunity to lead this historic charity into the future while honoring its rich heritage.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
Develop and implement the RSL's strategic vision and plans
Provide organizational leadership and management
Work closely with the Chair, Council, and President to advance the RSL's mission
Drive initiatives that ensure the RSL remains relevant, inclusive, and forward-thinking
Organizational Management
Oversee operational planning and implementation
Manage financial planning, budgeting, and resource allocation
Lead and develop the experienced staff team
Ensure effective governance and compliance with charity regulations
External Relations
Serve as a primary ambassador and public face of the RSL alongside the President
Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including Fellows, writers, donors, partners, and the wider literary community
Enhance the RSL's profile and visibility across diverse audiences
Represent the organization at events, in the media, and other public forums
Programs and Activities
Oversee the RSL's core activities including awards, prizes, events, and publications
Support outreach initiatives that expand the RSL's reach and impact
Ensure programming reflects the organization's commitment to diversity and inclusion
Preserve and promote the significance of RSL Fellowship
Development and Fundraising
Lead fundraising strategies and initiatives
Cultivate relationships with existing and potential donors
Identify and pursue new funding opportunities
Ensure financial sustainability for the organization
Qualifications & Experience
Proven leadership and management experience
Strategic planning and implementation skills
Financial management and operational expertise
Strong communication and interpersonal abilities
Experience working with boards, councils, or committees
Understanding of charity governance (advantageous)
Fundraising and development experience (advantageous)
Passion for literature and appreciation of the RSL's importance to writers
Commitment to diversity, inclusion, and expanding access to literature
